Clements Funding Recipient Mary Vo talks about her internship at the Carnegie Council

Jul 11, 2016

This summer, the Center funded thirteen students and here is Mary Vo’s story.

“For summer 2016, I am interning at the Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs in New York City. As a nonpartisan educational institution for international affairs, the Council tackles a broad spectrum of projects published in various forms: podcasts, journals, articles, videos, and exhibitions. Given their long-standing reputation and broad reach, I am pleased to be a part of their team.

My role with the Council is largely with the Asia Dialogues Program, for which I am researching policy changes in Japan. Among these topics are gender norms and higher education reform. For my work, I have been able to use my research and writing skills and Japanese language proficiency. Through my time here, I have met notable experts and gained a holistic view of socioeconomic changes in Japan tied to the world at large. I am also preparing the syllabus for the upcoming program on Indonesia.

In addition to this summer internship, I am also a Pacific Delegate for the Council’s upcoming fact-finding trip to Tokyo this fall. For that, I will be researching the current impact of Prime Minister Abe’s “womenomics” policies.

Being at the Carnegie Council requires being up-to-date on news and adaptable, so I have learned to receive and process information more quickly. Already I feel that this experience has helped me polish my skills in international affairs.”
