Beyond the Cold War: Lyndon Johnson and the New Global Challenges of the 1960s

Feb 03, 2014

The volume features articles by a number of experts in U.S. foreign relations to create a new international history of the 1960s. Their work challenges historians’ traditional focus on the Cold War as the most important feature of the postwar international scene. Contrasting this view, the book presents some of the global challenges that emerged during the 1960s and which continue to shape our world today—energy dependence, epidemic diseases, and massive increases in trade and monetary flows. The book also explains how the Johnson Administration responded to these challenges, as well as the extent to which these issues were understood and prioritized by the U.S. government and the American public. Some of the topics addressed in this book include economic globalization, global war on hunger, poverty and disease, and emergence of environmentalism and human rights.
